I'd put a gas mask on before you come in ere mate! "I hope you lot like the green decor. Only, Mr Grace weren't willing to go above a fiver to have this place done out. Luckily, I found some tins of old paint in the basement. It all looks very nice, apart from the fact that the paint, being very old, contains dangerously high levels of lead. Therefore, from now on I will be wearing breathing apparatus when I enter this department."
In
his autobiography, "Through the Mill and Beyond" Arthur recounts
memorable moments of his life, including his time as a tank commander
during the second world war and stint as a painter and
decorator.
While advancing through
war torn France he became lost from his unit. Upon coming across a column of
men and vehicles he decided to "ask these chaps if they know
where we are". On approaching one of the vehicles he noted its
occupants were talking in German. Needless to say, Arthur decided to
do a very quick and quiet about-turn and tip-toed back to his
vehicle before getting the "hell out" out of there.
